Why the material matters more than the shape
A strawberry, a pack of butter and a capybara can all three feel completely different. The shape is fun, but the material decides the experience: how soft it is, how quickly it rises back, whether it makes any sound and how far you can stretch it.
There are roughly four materials. Below we put them side by side.
Slow rise: calm and visual
Soft foam that comes back slowly. You squeeze it flat and watch it rise again over a few seconds. This is the material of the butter squishies and of most of the bread rolls, pastries and animals.
Choose this if you are looking for calm and enjoy watching the rise. Also handy for keeping your hands busy during homework or on the go.
Watch out: slow rise foam is the most delicate of the four. Do not stretch it fully.
Crunchy: it is all about the sound
From the outside a crunchy squishy looks like an ordinary squishy, but inside there is a grainy filling that crackles the moment you squeeze. The sound is the whole point, and that is why you see them so often in ASMR videos.
Choose this if you like sound and want that crackling feeling under your fingers.
Watch out: in a quiet classroom or office it gets noticed.
Jelly and sugar: see-through and stretchy
The sugar squishies are see-through and filled with a jelly-like mass, often with glitter. You see the filling move as you squeeze, and you can stretch it a long way.
Choose this if you like seeing what happens inside, and prefer stretching to only squeezing.
Watch out: they are heavier and feel cooler than foam.
Vaseline: the stretchiest of all
A vaseline squishy has a thick, syrupy filling. You can pull it really far apart and afterwards it flows back into shape by itself. This is the slowest and heaviest of the lot.
Choose this if you want the maximum when it comes to stretching.
And what about PU and TPR?
Those are the two types of foam you mostly come across in the cheese squishies. PU is light and airy and comes back gently. TPR feels firmer and stretches further without going limp. If you see both versions of the same product, that is the difference.
In short
- Calm and watching it rise back: slow rise
- Sound and ASMR: crunchy
- Seeing what happens inside: sugar or jelly
- Stretching as far as possible: vaseline
- Light and handy: PU. Firm and stretchy: TPR
