Which powder brush should you pick?
For setting your whole face you want a large brush with loose, fluffy bristles. It picks up little product and spreads it evenly, so your skin turns matte without going dull. A smaller, denser powder brush is lovely for more targeted work, for example your T zone or setting your concealer. Only want one powder brush? Then take the large fluffy one and control the amount of product instead.
What is a kabuki brush?
A kabuki brush has a short handle and a wide, very dense head. That density means it buffs product into your skin instead of sweeping it across, which makes it suitable for powder, bronzer and body glow on larger areas. The short handle also makes it easy to take with you: it fits in your make-up bag without the bristles getting squashed. A kabuki comes in a fluffy version for powder and a denser version for cream products.
How do you set your make-up with powder?
Dip your brush in the powder and tap the excess off properly, because most powder mishaps come from too much product on the brush. Then only set the places where you get shiny: your T zone, around your nose and under your eyes. Work with sweeping or pressing movements and build up if you need to. On the rest of your face your skin can keep some glow, which keeps it natural.
Loose powder or pressed powder?
Loose powder has a finer texture and lays down the thinnest layer, so you pair it with a large fluffy brush. Pressed powder is firmer and easier to carry, and works well with a smaller, slightly denser brush or the sponge from the compact. For baking you use loose powder and a powder puff, not a brush.
Powder brush or powder puff?
A powder brush sweeps powder across your skin and gives a light, even layer. A powder puff presses powder into your skin and therefore lays down far more product, which makes it perfect for baking and for setting your under eye area. Most people use the brush for their whole face and the puff only where it counts.
A kabuki for bronzer and body glow
Because a kabuki covers a large area in one movement, it is also the nicest brush for bronzer on your face and glow on your shoulders and décolletage. If you want to place bronzer sharply under your cheekbone instead, a narrower bronzer or contour brush makes more sense: it lays product along a line rather than across an area.
How do you clean a powder brush?
A powder brush gets dirty less quickly than a foundation brush, but powder mixes with skin oils and then the bristles start to clump. Wash it every week or two with lukewarm water and a brush cleanser or brush soap, keep the bristles pointing down, squeeze gently, reshape them and let the brush dry flat or upside down. With a dense kabuki a cleansing mat helps.
