What is a butter squishy?
A butter squishy is a soft squishy shaped like a pack of butter. It is made of slow rise material, a kind of soft foam that comes back into shape slowly after you squeeze it. You press it completely flat, let go, and then watch it rise back to its original shape in a few seconds.
That slow rise is exactly why it is so popular. It calms you down, it is satisfying to watch and you can repeat it endlessly without the material suffering.
Why slow rise makes the difference
With an ordinary stress ball the material springs back straight away. With slow rise it happens gradually, and that makes for a completely different experience. You see the shape rebuild itself instead of it simply happening. That effect is exactly what works so well in TikTok videos, and it is also the reason people find it so relaxing at home.
The bigger the squishy, the longer it takes to rise back. An XL simply has more material that needs to find its way back.
Which butter squishies are there?
The range has grown a lot by now. Broadly speaking, they differ in four things.
- Size. Small, medium, XL and XXL. Small fits in your pencil case, XL takes two hands to squeeze.
- Print. Besides the classic yellow block there are tie dye in pink white and purple white, galaxy, rainbow, watermelon, strawberry and gold.
- Material. The standard is slow rise foam. The TPR version feels firmer and stretches further. The crunchy version has a grainy filling that crackles when you squeeze.
- Shape. Usually the rectangular pack, but there is a cylindrical version too.

If you are after the calm, visual effect of the slow rise, the regular butter squishy is the right one. If you want sound with it, go for a crunchy squishy. That one crackles with every squeeze and that is a completely different experience, even though it looks the same from the outside.
How do you keep it looking good?
Squeeze it gently and do not fold it double. Do not pull it fully apart either, because that is what tears the soft material fastest. Keep it dry and out of direct sunlight, so the colour stays bright.
