Concealer: fresh eyes and an even complexion
What is concealer and what do you use it for?
The name says it all: a concealer conceals. It's a high-coverage makeup product you apply to specific areas to even them out, such as dark circles under your eyes, redness or blemishes. Concealer is usually more pigmented than foundation, so a little goes a long way.
What's the difference between concealer and foundation?
Foundation creates an even base over your whole face, while concealer is applied exactly where you need extra coverage. It's thicker and more opaque. If you only have the odd blemish, you can easily wear concealer without foundation.
What types of concealer are there?
- Liquid concealer: easy to blend and ideal under the eyes because it doesn't settle into fine lines.
- Cream concealer: creamy or in stick form, with extra coverage for blemishes, redness and scars.
- Colour corrector: a tinted concealer that neutralises discolouration: green for redness, peach and orange for dark circles, lilac for dull skin.
- Under eye brightener: a pink or peach-toned concealer that lifts dark circles and instantly wakes up your eyes.
- Concealer palettes: multiple shades in one palette, so you can mix your perfect match yourself.
Which concealer shade should you choose?
Under your eyes, choose a concealer one to two shades lighter than your skin: it opens up and brightens your eyes. For blemishes and redness, pick your exact skin tone so the concealer melts into your skin. Can you still see blue or purple showing through? Start with a colour corrector and apply your skin-tone concealer on top.
How and in what order do you apply concealer?
If you use liquid foundation, apply it first and then use concealer on the areas that need more coverage. With powder foundation, concealer goes on first. Dab concealer in with your finger, a small brush or a damp sponge rather than rubbing. Then set everything with a setting powder so it lasts all day.
Can you use concealer all over your face?
You can, but it's rarely necessary. Concealer is heavier than foundation and quickly feels thick over a large area. For a natural finish, only use concealer where you need it and blend the edges well. A thin layer of eye cream also helps stop concealer settling into fine lines.
