What does an eyelash curler do?
An eyelash curler clamps your lashes briefly between two pads and bends them into a set curve. That bend makes your lashes point up instead of straight ahead, and visually it does more than an extra coat of mascara. On straight or heavy lashes it is the only thing that really works.
How do you use a lash curler?
- Always on clean, dry lashes: curling after mascara sticks and pulls hairs out.
- Start at the root: set the curler as close to your lid as you can and squeeze gently.
- Ten to fifteen seconds: hold, release, then repeat a little further towards the tip.
- Lock the curl in: finish with mascara, or the curl drops again during the day.
Is an eyelash curler bad for your lashes?
No, as long as you use it dry and without tugging. What does break lashes: curling over mascara, pressing down with a worn pad, and pulling the curler away sideways while it is still closed. Always open it first, then take it off.
Curling your lashes without a curler
Can you do it without? A curl mascara gives a light lift and is enough if your lashes already bend on their own. Twisting the mascara wand upwards at the root helps too. For a real, lasting bend you still need a curler.
When do you replace the pad?
The pad is the only part that wears out. If there's a groove in it, or if your curler leaves a sharp angle instead of a curve, it's time. Most models come with a spare pad in the box. Wipe the pad clean now and then as well, because dried mascara makes it hard.
Which eyelash curler suits your eye shape?
A wide, classic curler catches the whole lash line in one go and works for most eyes. If you have round eyes or a strongly curved lid, a model with a deeper curve sits better. For the outer corners and your lower lashes a mini curler is easier to handle, and it fits in your bag.
