Builder gel in a pot: the strongest way to build
Builder gel from a pot, also known as hard gel, is the thickest and firmest form of builder gel. You scoop it up with a spatula or brush and shape it yourself, then cure it under a UV or LED lamp. Because the gel does not run, you decide exactly where you build: that makes it the only builder you can genuinely extend with.
Pot or bottle: what is the difference?
All builder gels strengthen your nail, but the packaging decides how you work.

In short: a pot asks more technique and gives more result. If you are coming straight from gel polish, BIAB is a gentler start.
Hard gel or soak-off builder gel?
When choosing, look at how the gel comes off again. A classic hard gel does not soak off and has to be filed away completely. A soak off builder gel is formulated so that it does release with remover once you have filed off the top layer. If the packaging says nothing about it, assume you will be filing. That makes a nail drill a tool rather than a luxury.
How do you apply builder gel from a pot?
- Push back your cuticles, file your nail into shape and matte the surface with a buffer.
- Degrease the nail plate with a cleanser or primer.
- Apply a thin layer of base and cure.
- If you want to extend, first place a nail tip or dual form.
- Scoop up a bead of gel with your spatula, place it on the nail and draw it out with a flat brush. Tilt your hand so the gel settles towards the centre.
- Build your apex: the thickest point sits about a third of the way up your nail, measured from the cuticle.
- Cure under your UV/LED lamp: 60 to 90 seconds under LED, 2 to 3 minutes under UV.
- File the shape, wipe off the dust and finish with a top coat or a colour of gel polish.
Work in thin layers and keep the gel off your cuticle. That is the main cause of lifting, and the main cause of irritation as well.
How do you remove builder gel?
- File off the shiny top layer with a file or nail drill.
- File the layer back until only a thin remainder is left.
- Is it a soak-off gel? Then place a cotton pad with remover on the rest, wrap your nail in foil and leave it for 15 minutes. With a true hard gel you keep filing all the way.
- Push the softened residue away with a cuticle stick and care for your nails with cuticle oil.
Never pull or pry a layer off: a layer of your natural nail comes with it.
Builder gel and acrylates
Builder gels are built from acrylates, and that is where the strength comes from. If you are sensitive to acrylates or your cuticles get irritated easily, read the ingredient list on the product page and keep the product off your skin. Products without HEMA are in HEMA-free gel polish.

What is the difference between builder gel and hard gel?
Nothing substantial: hard gel is the older name for the same thick, building gel from a pot. Brands use the terms interchangeably.
Do you need a separate brush?

How long does builder gel last?
Three to four weeks. After that your nail has grown out far enough that a refill is nicer than waiting.
Can you put gel polish over builder gel?
