Gel polish prep: nail prep for a long-lasting result

How long your gel polish stays put is largely decided before the first layer of colour goes on your nail. In this collection you'll find the products for that preparation: dehydrators, cleansers or degreasers, and primers and bonders. Together they make sure your nail is clean and free of oils, and that the gel polish can adhere properly.

Prepping your nails step by step

Start by shaping your nails and pushing back your cuticles. Then buff the shine off the nail plate, so the surface is slightly rough. Remove the dust with a cleanser or degreaser, which also takes away any oily residue. Next apply a dehydrator to draw the last moisture out of the nail plate, followed by a primer or bonder as a bonding layer. Only once the nail is completely dry do you move on to your base coat.

Preventing lifting

Lifting, where the gel polish comes away at the edges, is usually caused by oil, moisture or dust on the nail. So work with clean hands, don't touch your nail after degreasing and keep the products off your cuticles. Let every step dry properly before you continue and don't forget the free edge of your nail.

Dehydrator, cleanser or primer?

A cleanser cleans the nail and removes dust and oil. A dehydrator draws the moisture out of the nail plate. A primer or bonder stays on the nail and works as a bonding layer between your nail and the gel polish. Only looking for a primer? You'll find those in the Primer collection. This page brings together everything for the preparation step.
