What does eyebrow dye actually do?

A dye kit contains a cream or gel and an activator that you mix together. That mixture goes into the hair shaft and colours the hair from the inside. That is why dye also works on the pale, almost invisible fluff around your brow: it becomes visible and your brow instantly looks fuller, without a single line being drawn anywhere.

How long does eyebrow dye last?

Count on two to six weeks, depending on the product, your hair type and how often you wash your face. The colour fades gradually rather than coming off all at once. If you want something that only has to last a few days, look at the tint pens under brow pen or at a tinted brow gel.

Which shade should you pick?

Go one shade lighter than your hair, not darker. Dye grabs brow hair more strongly than you expect, and you can always dye a second time, while too dark cannot be undone. On blonde or light brown hair, dark brown is almost always enough; black only makes sense on genuinely black hair.

Dyeing your brows, step by step

• Do the sensitivity test first as described in the leaflet, even if you have dyed before. It is on the packaging for a reason.
• Make sure your brows are clean, dry and free of makeup.
• Put a rim of petroleum jelly on the skin around your brow. That keeps the dye off your skin.
• Mix according to the instructions and apply with the brush provided, right up close to the skin.
• Stick to the processing time. Leaving it longer does not give a nicer colour, only more chance of irritation.
• Wipe off with a damp cotton bud or tissue and judge the colour only once everything is dry.

Dye or something else?

Dye is the logical choice if your brows are light or if you simply do not want to do them every day. If they are dark enough but have gaps, an eyebrow pencil or eyebrow powder will help you more. And if it is mainly shape and hold you are after, brow soap or a gel is what you want.
