Glitter mascara or glitter topper, what is the difference
There are two kinds. A real glitter mascara has the glitter particles in the mascara formula itself, so you apply it to bare lashes and you are done. A topper is more transparent and adds almost no volume, so it goes over your regular mascara.
The practical difference is in how you build it up. A glitter mascara gives you colour and sparkle in one step, but you are then stuck with the weight of that formula. With a topper you pick your own base, for example a volume mascara or a lengthening mascara, and you decide how much glitter goes on top.
How to apply it
- Curl your lashes first. Glitter makes a lash look heavier and a curled lash catches more light.
- Let your base mascara dry briefly. If you are working with a topper, wait until the layer underneath has just stopped feeling tacky. Too early and you pull the first layer loose again. Too late and the glitter sticks less well.
- Place the wand at the lash line and work towards the tips. With glitter one calm stroke works better than pumping back and forth, because pumping spreads the particles unevenly.
- Keep it to your top lashes. Glitter on your bottom lashes drops down faster and ends up under your eyes.
- Do not blink straight away. Look down for a few seconds while it dries.
If glitter does land on your cheek, wait until everything is dry and lift it off with the sticky side of a piece of tape. Wiping only makes the mark bigger.
Choosing the colour
Gold and champagne give the warmest glow and stand out on brown and green eyes. Silver and holographic are cooler and pop on blue and grey eyes. If you want the glitter itself to be the statement, an outspoken colour such as lilac works best on an otherwise bare eye look.

Building on with glitter
If you stop at your lashes, you are done. If you want more, the order matters: glitter on your lid goes on top of a glitter primer, otherwise it sinks into your crease. A glitter liner is the middle road, giving you a clear line with sparkle without having to place loose particles.
Removing glitter mascara
This is where it usually goes wrong. Glitter particles are bigger and stiffer than mascara pigment, so scrubbing with a cotton pad pushes them towards your eye instead of off it.
Soak the lashes first. Press a cotton pad with an oil or biphase remover onto your closed eye for twenty to thirty seconds and then wipe outwards in one movement. Repeat with a clean pad rather than pressing harder. Go over your lash line once more with a cotton bud afterwards, because that is where something stays behind the longest.
If you wear lenses, take them out before you start. A loose piece of glitter between lens and eye is a lot more annoying than half removed mascara.
