Which nail glue is the strongest and how long does it last?
Three ways to fix false nails in place
Most sets of false nails come with sticky tabs and a small tube of glue. Those are two very different things, and there is a third option as well.
- Sticky tabs, the double-sided adhesives. No drying time, no damage, and you can take them straight back off.
- Nail glue from a tube or with a brush. This is the standard and it holds the longest of the two.
- Gel glue, which you cure under a UV or LED lamp. Made for soft gel tips and by far the strongest of the three.
So which one you pick mostly depends on how long your set needs to stay on.
How long it stays on
With good prep you can roughly count on this:
- Sticky tabs: one to three days
- Nail glue: five to ten days
- Gel glue with tips: two to three weeks

What makes the difference is the prep
Glue does not stick to oil, and your nail is naturally oily. That is the reason nails let go while the glue is perfectly fine.
- Push your cuticles back and remove any loose skin
- Make the surface slightly matte with a buffer from nail prep and wipe the dust away
- Degrease with a cleanser or dehydrator, and do not touch your nail after that
- Pick the right size: the tip should fit from edge to edge, better a size too big and filed down than too small
Then apply a thin layer of glue to your own nail and a little inside the tip, place it at an angle near the cuticle and roll it forward so no air bubble stays underneath. Press down firmly for thirty seconds after that. Stay out of water for the first hour.
How to take them off without damage
Never pull. Pulling takes the top layers of your own nail with it and those take months to grow out.
Soak your hands for ten to fifteen minutes in warm water with a dash of washing-up liquid, or use acetone for a faster result. Then gently push the nail loose from the side. If it is still stuck, soak longer. Follow up with cuticle oil, because water and acetone both dry you out.
Gluing a tear in your own nail
This works and it is worth doing, because a tear you leave alone will keep running.
Cut a small piece from a tea bag or use a silk wrap, big enough to cover the tear. Apply a thin layer of nail glue, lay the piece on top, press it flat and let it dry. Then file it smooth with a fine file from nail files and paint a top coat over it. It holds until the tear has grown out.
Is stronger always better
No. The stronger the bond, the more force it takes to get the nail off again, and that force lands on your own nail plate. If you wear a new set every week, sticky tabs are kinder to your nails than glue.
Do not use ordinary superglue either. It is not made for use on your nails and it is more brittle, so at the first knock it simply breaks instead of flexing. Keep the glue off your skin as well.
