Most people search for a palette by the colour story they want, not by the number of pans. A warm neutral eyeshadow palette is the one you reach for most: beige, taupe, caramel and a deep brown cover an everyday look and an evening look from the same case. How many shades do you need in a palette?
More is not automatically better. A palette of six to nine shades in one colour family gets used almost daily and is small enough for your bag, which is exactly why mini and travel size palettes sell so well. A palette of twelve to eighteen shades gives you a day and an evening look from the same case. The big palettes of thirty shades and up are there if you really want to play with colour, but be honest: if you use four of them in practice, a smaller palette is the smarter buy.
Matte, shimmer, glitter and multichrome palettes
Matte eyeshadow has no shine, so it is the shade you build shape with: in your crease, in your outer corner and under your lower lash line. A good matte palette has a light skin tone, two mid tones and one genuinely dark colour, and the pans are soft enough to blend without leaving edges. Want to stand out instead? For a wedding you want shades that photograph well and last through the day, which means neutral and matte with one soft shimmer for the centre of the lid. Skip the heavy glitter, because flash picks up every particle, and pick a palette with a good taupe and a warm brown for the crease. Set the whole thing on an eyeshadow primer so the colour stays put from the ceremony to the last dance.
How to use your eyeshadow palette
Work from light to dark and build in layers:
- Set an eyeshadow primer on your lid first, so the pigments grip and do not crease.
- Apply the lightest shade over your whole lid up to your brow bone.
- Work a mid tone into your crease with a soft eyeshadow brush and blend the top edge out.
- Place the darkest shade in your outer corner only and pull it into a V towards your crease.
- Finish by patting a shimmer onto the centre of your lid, with a finger rather than a brush for the most shine.
