Single Eyeshadow
Sometimes you don't need a whole palette but exactly one colour. A single eyeshadow is one pan or pot that you buy on its own and carry on its own. Handy when a shade is missing from your palette, when you want to try a brand without buying twenty tones at once, or when you fill your own palette with magnetic pans. Why a single eyeshadow and not a palette?
Three reasons keep coming back. In practice you only use a few shades from an eyeshadow palette and pay for the rest anyway. You want one specific colour that isn't in any palette, a bright green or a true white for instance. Or you'd rather drop one pot in your bag than a case with thirty-five pans, which is why eyeshadow singles travel so well. If you have a magnetic palette, you build your own line-up out of loose pans, matched exactly to the colours you actually wear.
Eyeshadow singles, pots and pans
Single eyeshadows come in three shapes and it is worth knowing which you are buying. A pressed pan is a bare metal godet made to click into a magnetic palette, so it takes up almost no space and can be swapped out. An eyeshadow pot is a small jar with a lid that stands on its own and travels without a palette. Single eyeshadow by colour
With a single eyeshadow you deliberately pick one shade, so the colour choice is half the job. A warm taupe or a soft brown is the most versatile and suits every eye colour. Black eyeshadow works as an accent in your outer corner or to smudge an eyeliner out into a smokey eye. White eyeshadow goes in your inner corner and under your brow bone, where it opens up your eyes. Pink and peach look good on green and brown eyes, and copper and bronze bring blue eyes forward. For a bright colour such as blue, purple or green, a single eyeshadow is smarter than a whole palette anyway.
Matte, shimmer and glitter singles
Even on their own, singles come in finishes. Matte shades build shape and go in your crease and outer corner; a single matte eyeshadow in a mid brown is the one most people run out of first. Shimmer gives a satin sheen in the centre of your lid, and the Mono Pearly from Essence is a good example. Glitter singles have chunkier particles and are there when you want to stand out. If the colour shifts with the light you want multichrome eyeshadow, and if you'd rather have a creamy texture than powder, cream eyeshadow is your page.
How to apply a single eyeshadow
With one colour the technique matters more than with a palette:
- Set an eyeshadow primer on your lid, so one layer already covers.
- Pick the product up with a flat eyeshadow brush and tap the excess off.
- Press the colour onto your lid instead of sweeping it, and you keep the full pigmentation.
- Blend the edges only, with a clean, empty brush.
- Want depth? Use the same colour again in your outer corner and leave the centre lighter.
