Eyeshadow Primer
An eyeshadow base is the thin layer you put on your lid before you apply your eyeshadow. Plenty of people call it an eyeshadow primer or an eye shadow base, and it is the same product. It gives the pigments something to hold on to, so your colour comes up brighter and stays put all day instead of creasing after three hours. What does an eyeshadow base actually do?
Three things at once. It soaks up the oil on your lid, and that oil is the reason eyeshadow slides and streaks. It evens out the surface, so the colour grabs equally everywhere and does not settle into fine lines. And it gives your pigments grip, so one layer of eyeshadow does what would otherwise take three. A tinted or white base takes that further: it turns your lid into a neutral canvas on which bright and pale shades finally show up properly.
Which eyeshadow primer should you pick?
It mostly depends on your lid. A creamy tinted primer like the one from Milani or the Grip to Last from Catrice is the safe all-rounder and evens out redness at the same time. A clear gel base such as the Jelly Grip Eyeshadow Primer from Essence disappears under pale colours and feels light if you don't like much product. If your lid turns oily quickly, look for a primer that dries down matte and set it with a dusting of translucent powder. Working with glitter? Then you want something sticky rather than something matte.
What do you use under eyeshadow if you have no primer?
A thin layer of concealer with translucent powder over it comes close, but it lasts less well than a real base, because concealer contains oil itself. If you are working with loose pigments or glitter, a glitter gel or lash glue is actually better, because those are stickier. And if you set a cream eyeshadow or an eyeshadow stick as your base, that already works as a tinted primer under your powder.
How to apply an eyeshadow primer
Less really is more here:
- Take an amount the size of a grain of rice for both eyes together.
- Tap it out with your ring finger over your whole lid to just under your brow bone, and don't skip your inner corner.
- Wait until it is only just no longer tacky before you put your eyeshadow on, usually half a minute.
- On an oily lid, dust a thin layer of translucent powder over it, and your eyeshadow palette will blend out more easily.
- Too much primer backfires: the layer stays damp and your eyeshadow slides even more.
